      Mulch volume follows the same area-times-depth arithmetic as any bulk landscaping material, with one addition: a tree ring subtracts the trunk's own footprint from the covered area rather than treating the bed as a solid circle.

      Both modes return cubic yards and cubic feet together, since small beds are usually bought in bags measured by the foot while large beds are ordered in bulk by the yard.

      Mulch depth is set by the planting type, not by how much material happens to be on hand, and going deeper than the recommended figure does not help the plants beneath it. Three inches is the standard depth for a new bed; existing beds need far less because the previous season's layer has not fully broken down.

      A new flower bed with bare soil takes the full 3 inches to suppress weeds and hold moisture through summer. A bed mulched last year rarely needs more than a 1-inch top-up, since the existing layer has partly decomposed rather than disappeared, and refreshing at the full new-bed depth on top of what remains typically overshoots the intended finished depth.

      The formula is area multiplied by depth, converted to cubic yards by dividing by 27, and the only step that trips up a hand calculation is converting a depth given in inches into feet before multiplying. Divide inches by 12 first, every time.

      A 200 ft² bed at 3 inches deep works out as 3 ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft, then 200 × 0.25 = 50 ft³, then 50 ÷ 27 = 1.85 yd³. The same bed refreshed at 1 inch instead needs only 200 × (1 ÷ 12) = 16.67 ft³, or 0.62 yd³, less than a third of the new-bed volume for the same footprint.

      A border bed measuring 10 ft 6 in by 3 ft, mulched 3 inches deep, needs 7.875 cubic feet of mulch, just under a third of a cubic yard. Every step below carries the units through so the total can be checked.

      1. Convert the length to decimal feet. 10 ft 6 in = 10.5 ft

      2. Find the bed area. 10.5 ft × 3 ft = 31.5 ft²

      3. Convert the depth to feet. 3 in ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft

      4. Find the volume. 31.5 ft² × 0.25 ft = 7.875 ft³

      That bed is too small to justify a bulk delivery on its own; four 2 ft³ bags cover it with a small surplus, which is normal since bags rarely divide evenly into a bed's exact volume. Combine several small beds into one running total before deciding between bags and bulk, since the break-even point shifts once beds are added together.

      The decision between bulk and bagged mulch comes down to total volume and delivery minimums, not personal preference, and the calculator states the break-even point rather than leaving it to guesswork. Bagged mulch costs more per cubic yard almost everywhere, but a small order avoids a bulk delivery minimum entirely.

      A cubic yard of mulch in 1.5 ft³ bags takes 18 bags; in 2 ft³ bags, 27 ÷ 2 = 13.5, which rounds up to 14 whole bags; in 3 ft³ bags, 9 bags. A bulk yard priced at $45 delivered against 2 ft³ bags priced at $4 each puts the bagged cost for that same yard at 14 × $4 = $56, ten dollars more expensive before accounting for the trip to buy them. Below roughly a third of a yard, most suppliers' delivery minimum makes bags the only practical option regardless of the per-bag premium.

      Mulch type changes weight, colour retention and how long a layer lasts before it needs replacing, and the volume calculation stays identical across every type since it depends on area and depth, not material. Weight varies enough between types that a truck loaded by weight rather than volume can arrive with a different cubic footage than expected.

      Shredded hardwood is the common default for foundation beds and holds its position well on slopes. Cedar resists insects naturally and fades more slowly than hardwood. Bark nuggets, shredded leaves, straw, pine needles, compost and stone are also used as mulch depending on the planting and the look wanted, though their coverage still follows the same area-times-depth formula above. Rubber mulch is nearly a third heavier than hardwood at the same volume, which matters when a delivery truck has a weight limit rather than a volume limit.

      Mulch piled directly against a trunk traps moisture against the bark and encourages rot and pests, a practice known as volcano mulching that damages far more trees than it protects. The calculator's tree-ring mode builds a clearance gap into the geometry by default so the mulched area never reaches the trunk.

      The default clearance is 6 inches from the trunk, keeping mulch off the root flare, the point where the trunk widens into the roots just above the soil line. A ring with an 8 ft outer diameter around a 12-inch trunk, at the default 6-inch clearance, covers a genuine ring rather than a solid circle, and the calculator subtracts the correct inner area automatically rather than requiring a separate subtraction step.

      An existing bed rarely needs the full new-bed depth again, because the previous layer has partly decomposed into the soil rather than vanished, and mulch layered too deep season after season eventually smothers the same roots it was meant to protect. Refreshing at 1 inch restores the finished look and the weed suppression without building up an excessive total depth.

      A bed mulched at 3 inches last year and now sitting at roughly half that depth needs only enough new material to bring it back to the original 3-inch target, not a full fresh 3-inch layer on top of what remains. Measuring the existing depth before ordering avoids paying for material that only adds to a layer that is already too thick, a common outcome when a bed is refreshed on the same schedule every single year without checking first.

      How much mulch do I need for a 10x10 area?

      A 10 ft by 10 ft bed is 100 ft². At the standard new-bed depth of 3 inches, that is 100 × 0.25 = 25 ft³, or 25 ÷ 27 = 0.93 cubic yards. At a 2-inch depth the same bed needs 16.67 ft³, or 0.62 cubic yards.

      How deep should mulch be?

      Three inches for a new bed, 2 inches for a path, and about 1 inch to refresh an existing bed where material already remains. Tree rings also use 3 inches. Deeper than that offers no extra benefit and can suffocate roots over time.

      How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?

      Eighteen bags at 1.5 ft³ each, 14 bags at 2 ft³ (27 ÷ 2 = 13.5, rounded up), or 9 bags at 3 ft³. Check the bag for its stated cubic-foot volume before dividing, since bag sizes are not standardised across brands.

      Is bulk mulch cheaper than bagged mulch?

      Almost always, once a delivery minimum is met. Bulk mulch typically costs less per cubic yard than the same volume in bags, sometimes by half or more, but a small order under a third of a yard may not clear the supplier's delivery minimum, making bags the more practical choice regardless of the per-unit price difference.

      How close to a tree trunk should mulch be?

      Leave a clear gap of about 6 inches between the mulch and the bark, and avoid piling mulch over the root flare, the point where the trunk widens at the soil line. Mulch built up against the trunk, sometimes called volcano mulching, traps moisture and invites rot and pests.

      How often should mulch be replaced or refreshed?

      Can I use the same calculator for straw or compost instead of bark mulch?

      Yes. The area-times-depth formula and the bag-size conversions apply to any bulk material measured by volume, including straw, compost and pine needles. Only the density differs between materials, and density affects weight, not the cubic-yard or cubic-foot volume the calculator returns.
