      Tape accuracy drives the Navy estimate more than the arithmetic does. A soft tape, a consistent landmark and a relaxed stance keep the inputs honest. Measure on bare skin or thin clothing, not over bulky layers, and take each reading twice if the first two disagree by more than half a centimetre.

      Neck circumference sits just below the larynx, with the tape level and snug but not compressing the skin. Waist for this method is usually taken at the narrowest point of the torso, or roughly at the navel level if the waistline is unclear; keep the tape horizontal and breathe out gently before reading. Hip circumference, required for the female formula, is the widest point of the buttocks with feet together and the tape level.

      Height should match the units the formula expects. The calculator accepts centimetres or feet and inches and converts as needed. Small measurement errors compound because the Navy equations use logarithms of circumference differences; a centimetre off at the waist can move the percentage by a noticeable amount inside the already wide error band.

      The US Navy circumference method estimates body density from height and selected girths, then converts that density into a body-fat percentage. Measurements enter in centimetres. The male and female equations differ because the female form includes hip circumference as a third girth beside waist and neck.

      When tape measurements are impractical, a BMI-based equation from Deurenberg and colleagues estimates body-fat percentage from BMI, age and sex. It needs no waist or neck reading. It also inherits BMI's blind spots: it cannot tell muscle from fat, so muscular adults often read higher than their true fat share.

      A worked example makes the Navy arithmetic concrete. Take an adult male, 180 cm tall, with a waist of 90 cm and a neck of 40 cm. These fixture measurements check the male path end to end, from the waist-minus-neck term through the final percentage.

      1. Form the waist-minus-neck term. 90 − 40 = 50 cm

      2. Take common logarithms. log10(50) ≈ 1.6990 log10(180) ≈ 2.2553

      3. Build the density expression. 1.0324 − 0.19077×1.6990 + 0.15456×2.2553 ≈ 0.8569

      4. Convert to percentage. 495 / 0.8569 − 450 ≈ 18.4%

      An estimate of about 18% for adult males sits in the ACE band labelled average (18 to 24). With the stated error band, the true value might reasonably sit a few points either side. That is still useful context. It is not a lab result.

      The same person at age 30 weighing 80 kg, using the BMI method instead: BMI = 80 / 1.8² ≈ 24.7, then 1.20×24.7 + 0.23×30 − 16.2 ≈ 20.3%. The two modes often disagree by a few points; when they do, prefer careful tape inputs over the BMI shortcut, and still treat either figure as an estimate.

      The US Army sets maximum body-fat percentages by age and sex for service members. Those ceilings are pass/fail administrative thresholds for military standards, not health categories and not ACE fitness bands. The Army mode on this page uses the same Navy circumference measurements, then frames the result against that administrative context rather than as a medical reading.

      A result that meets or misses an Army threshold says something about a service standard. It does not state whether a civilian body is healthy, athletic or average. Health categories on this page come from the ACE ranges below; the Army path is a separate lens for people who specifically need that comparison.
