Walks plus hits per inning pitched divides the sum of walks and hits by innings pitched. Unlike earned run average, WHIP does not split earned and unearned runs; every walk and every hit in the line adds one to the numerator. Walks and hits must be non-negative integers in ordinary use. Innings pitched must be greater than zero. Decimal IP mode accepts season totals such as 200.0 innings with aggregate walk and hit counts from a stat table.
Calculate WHIP for 2 walks and 5 hits over 6⅔ innings

- Baserunners: 2 + 5 = 7
- Outs: 6 × 3 + 2 = 20
- IP: 20 ÷ 3 = 6.667
- WHIP: 7 ÷ 6.667 = 1.05

Seven baserunners over six and two thirds innings is slightly above one baserunner per inning, a useful single-game sanity check before comparing to a season WHIP.
Calculate WHIP over a full season
For 50 walks, 150 hits, and 200.0 innings in decimal IP mode:
- Baserunners: 50 + 150 = 200
- WHIP: 200 ÷ 200 = 1.00

Season WHIP stabilizes with innings. A reliever who throws 40 innings can move from 0.85 to 1.10 on one bad outing; a 200-inning starter needs a long stretch of poor contact to move the rate by the same amount.
Know what counts toward WHIP
Walks, including intentional walks, count as one baserunner each. Hits of every type count: singles, doubles, triples, and home runs each add one to the numerator. The WHIP Calculator treats every walk and hit in the input fields as one counting event.
Reaching on catcher's interference is not a hit and not a walk in standard WHIP tables, so it stays out of the numerator. If a league publishes an adjusted rate that includes extra events, that is a different stat; this tool follows the walks-plus-hits definition.
Sacrifice bunts and sacrifice flies are not hits and do not count as walks, so they do not change WHIP when they advance a runner. A squeeze bunt that results in a fielder's choice might add a hit or walk to someone else's line but not to the pitcher's WHIP unless the scorer charges a hit or walk to the pitcher on that play.
Know what does not count toward WHIP
Hit-by-pitch does not add to WHIP even though it puts a runner on first. Errors and fielder's choice reachers are excluded because they are neither walks nor hits. Catcher's interference and batter interference calls also stay out unless a provider bundles them elsewhere.
Those excluded events can still affect ERA and runs scored. A pitcher may strand runners with a low ERA while WHIP stays elevated, or allow unearned runs after an error without changing WHIP. Enter walks and hits exactly as they appear on the pitching line you are checking.
A hit batsman who later scores on a homer does not increase WHIP for the hit-by-pitch itself, yet the run counts on the scoreboard. Separating WHIP from run prevention stats keeps the walk-and-hit rate readable without mixing in every way a runner reaches base.
Convert partial innings into decimals
Two outs after six innings is 6.667 IP, not 6.2 typed as a decimal. The separate outs field prevents the common mistake of treating broadcast notation as a decimal fraction of an inning. When only decimal IP is available from a season table, decimal mode skips the outs fields entirely.

Understand what a good WHIP is
WHIP, like ERA, shifts with run environment and league. The WHIP Calculator reports the rate from your inputs only and does not pull live league averages.
Illustrative MLB benchmarks, not tied to one season: around 1.00 often marks excellent baserunner prevention; near 1.30 has been close to league average for many qualified starters in recent years; marks above 1.40 frequently signal trouble when paired with average defense.
Relief samples swing more than rotation samples because the innings denominator is smaller.

WHIP tracks baserunners on walks and hits; ERA tracks earned runs scaled to innings per game. A pitcher can allow few hits yet give up hard contact with runners on base, or strand runners with a lower ERA and a higher WHIP.
