        One kilogram-force (kgf), also called a kilopond in some texts, is the force of standard gravity on one kilogram of mass. Standard gravity is 9.80665 m/s², so 1 kgf = 9.80665 N exactly under that definition.

        N = kgf × 9.80665

        Worked example: convert 5 kgf to newtons.

        Kilogram-force is not the same as kilogram mass. A 5 kg mass has a weight of about 5 kgf near standard gravity, but shopping scales that display "kg" are often presenting a mass inferred from force.         One dyne equals 10^−5 N, so 100,000 dynes equal 1 N. Older CGS papers quote dynes; SI notes quote newtons. The Force Converter scales dynes through that factor when dyne is the source or target unit.
