      Road base is ordered by weight, not volume, because quarries sell by the ton and a truck's load limit is set in tons rather than cubic yards. The calculator still starts from volume, since that is what a measured length, width and depth produce, and converts to tons using the selected material's density in the last step.

      Base material choice changes both compaction behaviour and tonnage, since density varies by close to 40 percent across the five materials the calculator carries. A dense, fines-heavy material compacts into a harder surface than a clean, uniform one, at the cost of drainage.

      ABC and DGA are the same product under two regional names: a graded mix running from roughly 3/4-inch stone down to rock dust, and the densest material on the list because the fines pack tightly between the larger pieces. Crusher run contains similar fines at a coarser overall gradation. Clean stone carries no fines at all, so it drains freely but never locks into a hard surface the way a graded material does. Recycled concrete aggregate is crushed demolition concrete, priced below virgin stone in most markets and comparable in compaction performance to crusher run.

      The volume step is identical to any other area-times-depth material; the tonnage step is what makes road base different from gravel, mulch or topsoil, since base is specified and purchased in tons far more consistently than the others.

      Skipping the depth conversion and multiplying a length and width in feet by a depth still in inches is the most common hand-calculation error on this formula, and it inflates the result by a factor of 12. Converting depth to feet before the first multiplication removes that risk entirely.

      A driveway measuring 60 ft long and 10 ft wide, with a 6-inch base of crusher run, needs 15 tons of material before compaction and waste are added. Every step below carries the units through. 1. Find the area. 60 ft × 10 ft = 600 ft²

      2. Convert the depth to feet. 6 in ÷ 12 = 0.5 ft

      3. Find the volume in cubic feet. 600 ft² × 0.5 ft = 300 ft³

      4. Convert to cubic yards. 300 ft³ ÷ 27 = 11.11 yd³

      Switching the same driveway to dense graded aggregate at 3,374 lb/yd³ raises the requirement to 18.74 tons for identical dimensions, a difference of nearly 4 tons from the material choice alone. That gap is worth confirming before ordering, since two quotes for "one truckload" of base can mean materially different weights.

      Add compaction and waste

      Base material is delivered and placed loose, then compacted with a plate compactor or a roller, and loose volume always exceeds compacted volume by a meaningful margin. Ordering the geometric volume without an allowance leaves a driveway short of its specified depth once the base is rolled.

      The default allowances are 20 percent for compaction and 10 percent for waste. Applying both to the 11.11 cubic yard driveway from the example above gives 11.11 × 1.20 × 1.10 = 14.67 cubic yards ordered, which at 2,700 lb/yd³ comes to 19.8 tons, nearly 5 tons more than the uncompacted geometric figure. That difference is the single largest adjustment on this page and is the reason a driveway ordered by raw geometry alone almost always runs short mid-job.

      Base placed in one thick layer compacts only at the surface, leaving the material underneath loose and prone to rutting once vehicles start using the finished surface. Placing base in lifts, thin layers compacted one at a time, solves this by keeping every inch of material within reach of the compactor.

      The default maximum lift thickness is 6 inches. A driveway specified at a 12-inch total base depth needs two lifts of 6 inches each, with a full pass of the plate compactor or roller between them. A 6-inch total depth, as in the example above, is placed and compacted in a single lift. Skipping the second compaction pass on a deep base is a common shortcut that shows up later as a driveway that looks finished but develops soft spots and ruts within a season.
